I hear so much about your line of clothing online… Now, tonight we’re gonna talk about a lot of different things on the Stephanie Stephens Show, and like I said you are young, energetic and you have your own clothing line of underwear and different things so tonight I want you to talk to us about those things, is that okay with you?
Matti:
Sounds great!
Stephanie Stephens:

Matti:
Yes

Okay, well we’re gonna get right into the questioning tonight for Retromatti. Can I just ask you now you send me in a couple of questions of things that I should ask you because you want your audience to be clear about exactly what you are doing?
Matti:
Well, you said the topic was vintage pornography, so, yeah…
Stephanie Stephens:
Yeah, how would you describe your relationship to vintage pornography?
Matti:
Well, I mean as a child of the 80s, you know, retro 70s and 80s porn was for me (and for many of my generation) our the first exposure to erotic film, that I experienced anyway. You know, we used to sneak into our parents’ closets, or we had older siblings. The style of retro pornography is really kind of one of the first that we were exposed to so naturally it leaves a kind of lasting impression on us.

Now, so that describes your and your generations’ personal relationship experiencing vintage and retro porn.
What about professionally any connections there?
Matti:
It’s kind of an aesthetic really overall. The clothing and especially the intimate garments that we saw in 70s gay porn was very distinctive.The high socks, the funky-colored briefs of that era – with that in mind, I got into designing a retro-futuristic underwear with a base influenced by the styles from that era.
Stephanie Stephens:
So you design and inspire retro underwear, is it made here in Canada?
Matti:
Yeah! Actually, right now, I make it all myself! Personally! I hand make every order on demand, just over there at our small studio here in the queer village, so just a half a block from where we’re sitting right now.
Stephanie Stephens:
So what what makes you different than other underwear makers?
Matti:
There have been manufacturers that have brought back the bright colors and stuff, but we’ve actually brought into the design end modern features like seamlessness on the sides, and a double front fly (so you can access whatever side you want), a lower hip fit as well. Although, I have to tell you a lot of my best-selling styles have been actually the high waist ones – it’s really hot in culture right now.
